Lead Writer/Content Strategist II (insurance)

The NerdWallet Content team is looking for an experienced writer/content strategist to join our Insurance team. In this role you’ll pitch, write and optimize articles, reviews and roundups that help readers learn and make choices about insurance products. This role serves as a thought leader, observing and reporting on industry trends and sharing your expertise and experience. As a writer/content strategist, you will also track and report content metrics, helping to build our content strategy and contribute ideas for new ways to reach our audience.
You are knowledgeable about personal finance topics and products, including the options available for consumers and strategies for choosing the right products. You are an excellent writer who consistently delivers self-edited, clean copy on deadline and strives for editorial excellence. You are skilled at managing multiple topic areas within a content library, including measuring performance and implementing growth opportunities. You are resilient and are able to be flexible and are highly comfortable with change. You are comfortable working on a small team that proactively responds to new opportunities and challenges. You are able to juggle multiple assignments at once, as well as a project or two. You are able to partner effectively with cross-functional teams, including SEO and product managers.

If you were here 6 months ago, here are some things you might have worked on:

  • Write an in-depth review of an auto, life, home, renters, or pet insurance company.
  • Use SEO tools to plan and conduct tests for improving page performance, and report on the results. Identify and adopt best practices.
  • Take the lead on coordinating a team-wide project.
  • Develop consumer-friendly ways to report insurance rates and other data.
  • Analyze and optimize product comparison pages to help consumers find what they need.
  • Strategize with the team about how to analyze insurance companies' strengths and weaknesses.

Where you can make an impact: 

  • Own multiple sections of our insurance content library. Track performance of these sections and make recommendations for building and optimizing the insurance content library.
  • Write new and update existing SEO articles and roundups based on analysis of rank, on-page engagement, competition, industry trends and traffic opportunity (for new pieces) or current performance (for existing pieces). Ensure articles and roundups reflect most recent SEO best practices as well as editorial excellence.
  • Write new and update existing reviews and best-of roundups of insurance products based on product research and our ratings methodology. Contribute to annual update of our ratings rubric and methodology.
  • Write new and update existing educational articles and guides that help consumers understand and make choices about complex insurance products. 
  • Occasionally write syndicated articles that reflect newsworthy developments related to insurance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to improve the user experience and build reader trust.
  • Research opportunities for new content and measure performance of existing content. Using this research to craft consumer-first, search-optimized content that answers readers’ questions and helps them make solid financial decisions. 

Your experience:

  • 5+ years of editorial experience, including at least 3 years writing about personal finance.
  • Solid knowledge of personal finance topics, preferably topics related to property & casualty insurance.
  • Strong familiarity with SEO best practices and proven implementation of SEO strategies. 
  • Track record of operating as a strong thought leader with an ownership mentality and taking informed risks.
  • Excellent writing, reporting and communication skills.
  • Passionate about self-improvement and at ease with constructive feedback.
  • Self-starter who works effectively both on your own and in a team setting.
  • Previous experience with interviewing sources, content management (updating and improving existing pages) and analyzing data sets.
  • Strong collaboration skills, experience making/using spreadsheets and Google docs, writing/reporting, interviewing sources, data analysis.

Base pay offered may vary within the posted range based on several factors, including but not limited to education, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
The pay range for this role is $84,000$158,000 USD
