Our Take
5.0
Real Genius is a smart pick for a do-it-yourself online quote. We’re impressed with its detailed, “no fine print” approach and options to sort and customize APR and fees. Borrowers with bad credit have options, including government-backed loans. However, Real Genius does not have a mobile app and doesn’t currently prioritize home equity or renovation loans.

Pros
-
Easy and transparent online rate quote tool.
-
May accept borrowers with low credit scores.
-
Closes loans in an average of 30 days (faster than industry average).
Cons
-
Federal data isn’t available for us to objectively compare this lender with others.
-
Home equity loans and HELOCs aren’t a priority.
-
Not currently lending in Maryland or U.S. territories.

Real Genius special offers and discounts
Real Genius focuses on making the mortgage process faster, cheaper and more efficient, using technology to streamline applications and charge lower fees. The lender tells us it closes home loans in 30 days on average — nearly two weeks faster than the national average of 42 days, according to mortgage data provider ICE Mortgage Technology.
Real Genius isn’t promoting any special offers (like first-time home buyer grants or closing cost assistance), which we’ve seen from other mortgage lenders.
What home loans does Real Genius specialize in?
A lender’s experience with your loan type can make a big difference. When writing our mortgage lender reviews, NerdWallet relies on the latest data from the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) to tell us which types of mortgages lenders handle most often.
A spokesperson from Real Genius tells us that 2024 HMDA data is not available for Real Genius, since the company put its mortgage lending business on hold from October 2023 through June 2025.
After restarting, Real Genius funded about 350 loans last year — less than its historical levels, and much lower than most lenders we review — but a lender spokesperson tells us they’re ramping production levels back up. Low loan volume is worth noting when choosing a mortgage lender, but it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker. For context, some regional credit unions may close just a few hundred mortgages a year.
We’ll update this review with new information when 2025 HMDA data is released.

🤓 Our Nerds say... Using the rate tool is actually fun

Abby Badach Doyle, lead writer, mortgages
Call me nerdy, but when it’s this simple to get a detailed rate quote — it feels like a little thrill to put together your own real estimate. You can toggle and sort what’s best for you, like getting the lowest possible APR vs. getting cash back at closing. I haven’t seen that level of detail at other lenders.
Another big perk: Real Genius lists pricing details, like lender fees, upfront. Other lenders hide that info in the fine print.

Alternatives to a Real Genius mortgage
Our biggest tip: Get offers from at least three different mortgage lenders. Comparison shopping can save you thousands of dollars. You can get rate quotes yourself, or work with a mortgage broker to shop around on your behalf.
We were similarly impressed with the online rate quote experience at up-and-coming lender Tomo — which also shows competitors’ rates. However, mortgages from Tomo aren’t yet available in all 50 states.
Better is an online-only lender that has lower-than-average rates, according to federal data — but we found its customer service to be a little clunky.

More from NerdWallet
NerdWallet’s overall ratings for mortgage lenders are evaluated based on four major categories: average mortgage rates and origination fees, rate transparency to consumers, variety of loan types (purchase, refinance, fixed and adjustable, for example) and customer experience. Among the factors we consider in these categories are: options to apply for home loans online, typical time to close, mobile app experience, level of detail about mortgage rates on lender websites, and NerdWallet’s own analysis of the rates and fees lenders reported in the latest available Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data. These and other items inform detailed rubrics, which generate ratings from 1 star (poor) to 5 stars (excellent). Read more about how we rate mortgage lenders here.
