AmEx Adds Cell Phone Protection for Premium Cardholders

Generous cell phone protection will now come standard with many premium American Express credit cards.

Calling American Express cardholders: If you hold The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or a number of other premium AmEx cards, you’re now getting an added perk.

Starting April 1, 2021, eligible cardholders who charge their wireless bill to their AmEx card are eligible to be reimbursed for cell phone repairs or replacement phones. The protection even covers screen damage, which is often excluded from protection. Terms apply.

Coverage goes up to $800 per claim, or $1,600 (two claims) per 12-month period. Each approved claim carries a $50 deductible. Terms apply.

Cards that will offer cell phone protection

According to a 2020 study by Statista, the average cost of a cell phone is $580, though some phones sell for $1,000 or more. This built-in cell phone protection can come in handy when you need it most. Just make sure you pay your bill with the card; simply holding the card isn’t enough to be eligible. Terms apply.

  • Coverage for a Stolen or damaged Eligible Cellular Wireless Telephone is subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limits of liability of this benefit. The maximum liability is $800, per claim, per Eligible Card Account. Each claim is subject to a $50 deductible. Coverage is limited to two (2) claims per Eligible Card Account per 12 month period.
