Between the Big Game and Valentine's Day, you're likely to be spending extra money on snacks, cards and candy and beverages throughout February. Here’s your guide for what to buy (and skip) this month, based on NerdWallet’s analysis of historical sales cycles.

Buy: TVs

February is Super Bowl month, and the beginning of the year is traditionally one of the best times to purchase a new home entertainment item. We regularly see sales on big-screen TVs at retailers like Best Buy, Amazon, Costco and Target.

You won't have much longer to shop: Super Bowl Sunday is Feb. 9.

Skip: Flowers

If you insist on sending your main squeeze flowers for Valentine's Day (or Groundhog Day, or any other February day just because) plan ahead. Some flowers shops online offer free standard shipping on select arrangements, especially if you take care to order long before Feb. 14 rolls around.

If you've already been priced out of your flower budget, don't despair. Frame a favorite photo, build a gift basket or, if they're playful, surprise them with a bouquet or mini orchid from LEGO's Botanical Collection.

Buy: Valentine's Day clearance

Speaking of Valentine's Day, the days after are a sweet time to stock up on chocolates, cute stuffed animals and other marked down gifts. Look for seasonal sales at retailers like Walmart, Target, drug stores and major grocery stores.

Skip: Most electronics

Aside from that TV upgrade, avoid purchasing consumer electronics this month. Items such as laptops, desktops, tablets and video game consoles typically are best bought in November, during Black Friday sales.

If you can’t wait until then, there will be other opportunities throughout the year. For example, select retailers hold “Black Friday in July” events before back-to-school season. Amazon has been known to hold its Prime Day sale in July, as it did last year.

Buy: Winter products

From cozy clothing to sporting equipment, now’s the time to stock up on winter products. You’ll still have time to use the items this year, and you’ll get them at a discount. Winter products are on their way out the door because many retailers have already released spring arrivals, which typically hit shelves at full price.

Shop: Presidents' Day sales

Valentine’s Day isn't the only major holiday in February. Presidents Day falls on Feb. 17, and if this year is like previous ones, expect retailers to host holiday weekend sales. They’ll likely focus on home goods, such as bedding, furniture, mattresses and small kitchen appliances. You could score free shipping, too.

Historically, we’ve seen deals across an assortment of retailers, including Mattress Firm, Serta, Best Buy, Lowe’s and more. So what should you expect? In the past, mattress brand Saatva offered savings of up to $500 off Presidents' Day purchases. Lowe’s discounted select appliances by up to 35%.

Bonus: National Frozen Yogurt Day

Finally, sweeten up an already sweet month with National Frozen Yogurt Day on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Look for free or discounted yogurt at a business near you and be sure to check social media for leads on the best froyo promos. In past years, we’ve seen buy-one-get-one deals on the frozen treat.
