Rocket Homes Review

Rocket Homes — a sister company of Rocket Mortgage — matches you with real estate agents and provides online tools to shop for, buy or sell a home.

Some or all of the mortgage lenders featured on our site are advertising partners of NerdWallet, but this does not influence our evaluations, lender star ratings or the order in which lenders are listed on the page. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners.

What is Rocket Homes?

Rocket Homes Real Estate is a sister company of Rocket Mortgage, an online mortgage lender. Through its website and app, Rocket Homes helps buyers shop for and purchase homes, and it assists homeowners with listing and selling their properties. The company matches buyers and sellers with local, vetted agents from a variety of brokerages.

Rocket Homes and Rocket Mortgage are subsidiaries of Rocket Companies, which also includes title and settlement service provider Amrock, ForSaleByOwner.com and Rocket Loans, an online personal loans lender. With many services focused on housing, Rocket Companies aims to be a one-stop shop for home buyers and sellers.

Here's a breakdown of Rocket Homes' services.

For home buyers

Home buyers can use the website or app to:

  • Search for home listings.

  • Request a connection with a real estate buyer's agent vetted by Rocket Homes.

  • Get local housing market reports, where available.

Naturally, you can also apply for a mortgage with Rocket Mortgage, although buyers may use Rocket Homes without financing through Rocket Mortgage. There's incentive for using both: Buyers who use Rocket Homes and Rocket Mortgage are eligible for a closing credit of up to $10,000.

For home sellers

Homeowners can use Rocket Homes to sell via a partner agent or as a way to connect with its sister company, ForSaleByOwner.com.

If you sell with Rocket Homes, a local listing agent affiliated with Rocket Homes will assist you throughout the home selling process. You'll pay a standard real estate agent commission, but get a rebate of up to 0.5% of the sale price after closing. Sellers who also buy a home with a Rocket Homes agent and Rocket Mortgage financing can get the buyer's closing credit, too.

Home sellers can also access free property reports through Rocket Homes about local housing market conditions, including information about the number of homes for sale, asking prices, similar homes recently sold and average time on market.

Working with a Rocket Homes partner agent

Rocket Homes "Verified Partner Agents" are real estate agents who have joined the company's network to get matched with buyers and sellers. To be part of the network, agents must have:

  • At least 24 months of experience working as a full-time agent.

  • Closed at least five real estate transactions in the last 12 months.

  • An average client satisfaction rating of at least 4 out of 5 stars.

To get matched with an agent, you fill out a short online form or call the company. Rocket Homes will ask for basic information and then pick an agent who matches your needs. The company says an agent will contact you within 24 hours. If you're not satisfied with your agent, Rocket Homes says it will correct the situation or connect you with another agent.

Agents who get matched pay a referral fee to Rocket Homes after the transaction closes.

Getting a referral to a Rocket Homes partner agent may serve you well if you've shopped lenders and want to work with Rocket Mortgage. It's still a good idea to interview referred agents, check out their websites and ask for references to make sure the professional is the right fit.

Rocket Homes pros and cons

Rocket Homes' most stand-out feature may be its data reports, which offer easy-to-digest breakdowns of market conditions and comparable homes for sale. You could find that data elsewhere, but it would take considerable digging. Rocket Homes' listings pull from Multiple Listing Services, the same as many other real estate sites.

Real estate agents within its partner network must meet qualifications both to join and maintain an affiliation with Rocket Homes. Unlike some networks, Rocket Homes is transparent about these standards. But as with any real estate agent network, you're getting convenience but possibly giving up finding an agent who might be a better fit. Buyers already considering Rocket Mortgage financing might decide that the closing credit is worth that trade-off.

Rocket Homes and consumer trust

On December 23, 2024, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau filed a lawsuit against Rocket Homes as well as real estate brokerage firm the Jason Mitchell Group, alleging that the companies colluded in a kickback scheme where partner agents received payments for steering home buyers to Rocket Mortgage. Receiving compensation for a mortgage referral is illegal under the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, also known as RESPA.

According to a Rocket Homes statement to NerdWallet, "The CFPB's allegations are false and a distortion of reality. … Rocket Homes is committed to empowering homebuyers to make the best decisions for their unique needs."

NerdWallet always recommends that home buyers comparison shop at least three mortgage lenders, in order to find the lender that's the best fit and offers the lowest combination of rates and fees.
