Aeromexico: The Complete Guide

Aeromexico is the flag carrier of Mexico that's been around since 1934. The airline flies domestically to just about every major Mexican airport. The carrier also flies a robust international route to the U.S., the Caribbean, Latin America, South America, Europe and Asia.

Aeromexico is a founding member of the SkyTeam Alliance, which means it partners with Delta Air Lines and a slew of international carriers like Air France, KLM and ITA Airways — among others.

For U.S. travelers, there are several reasons you could end up flying with Aeromexico in the future, including:

• If you’re traveling to the airline’s operating base in Mexico City.

• If you’re a Delta or SkyTeam loyalist connecting in Mexico City en route to another popular Mexican or Latin American vacation destination, like Cabo or Cancun.

• If you find a great international deal to Europe or beyond on the airline (a connection in Mexico City likely required).

With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about flying Aeromexico and its Aeromexico Rewards loyalty program.

Aeromexico is based in Mexico City, which is where it operates its primary hub. That’s where the vast majority of its international flights take off and land, including those between Mexico and the United States.

Aeromexico operates a fleet featuring Embraer 190, Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX aircraft, as well as Boeing 787 Dreamliners — the latter, particularly on its long-haul flights.

You can fly Aeromexico from numerous U.S. cities, particularly those in the Southwest, including:

Most Aeromexico flights from the U.S. fly into Mexico City. That means, if you want to fly with the carrier to Cancun, Cabo or a much farther overseas destination, you’ll typically have to make a connection there.

The carrier flies to many popular overseas destinations from its Mexico City hub, including, but not limited to:

• Amsterdam.

• London - LHR.

• Madrid.

• Paris.

• Rome.

• Santiago de Chile.

• Tokyo. 

Aeromexico has four main fare classes: Basic, Classic, AM Plus and Premier. There are refundable and nonrefundable ticket options for each category, aside from Basic.

Here’s what to know about each:

Basic: Think basic economy — the lowest fares, but the most restrictions. Fortunately, Aeromexico’s Basic fare comes with a complimentary full-sized carry-on bag, in addition to a personal item that fits under the seat.

However, Basic flyers do not get free seat selection, a complimentary checked bag, ticket changes, refunds or even re-scheduling if you miss your flight. Passengers flying on a basic ticket also cannot earn elite qualifying points or segments.

Classic: Aeromexico’s standard economy ticket. These flyers are upgrade eligible, get complimentary standard seat selection and a 25% discount on checked baggage.

AM Plus: This is the airline’s version of "economy plus," or extra legroom seating in the main cabin. On top of the Classic fare benefits, these flyers will enjoy SkyPriority benefits at the airport. That gets them perks like priority check-in, early boarding and free baggage.

AM Plus flyers also get access to reserved overhead bins and more spacious seats than standard coach seating.

Premier: Aeromexico’s premium cabin, which ranges from spacious seating with generous recline on shorter routes to more luxurious, lie-flat accommodations on longer and busier ones.

Aeromexico business class

Aeromexico calls its premium cabin “Clase Premier.” This features everything from a bit more space and extra perks on some short-hop flights, to a true premium, lie-flat experience on longer, high-volume routes.

The airline actually divides its Premier experience into three subcategories, so you know which experience to expect:

• Premier Light - The ‘lowest’ level of Premier. Don’t expect lie-flat seats here — rather, the airline just blocks the middle seat to give you a bit more space. Travelers do get SkyPriority benefits, lounge access, two checked bags and an exclusive menu.

• Premier - Features the Premier Light benefits, but with lie-flat seats.

• Premier One - Lie flat seats with the airline’s most exclusive service and up to 60 inches of space.

You can book Premier tickets initially, upgrade your main cabin seats with cash or points, or bid on the premium seats.

In April 2023, Aeromexico’s loyalty program changed its name from Club Premier to Aeromexico Rewards. The rebranded program uses a loyalty currency known as Aeromexico Rewards Points and those points do not expire.

Like many airlines, Aeromexico Rewards members can earn award travel and elite status through a combination of flying, co-branded credit card spending and purchases through partner companies.

Earn by flying

Like a lot of airline and hotel loyalty programs, Aeromexico has shifted its program to be more closely tied to the amount you spend. On most flights, Aeromexico Rewards members earn 8 points per dollar spent.

Fly on partners

As part of the SkyTeam alliance, Aeromexico Rewards members can also earn points when flying with the airline’s partner carriers. The most prominent such airline for U.S. travelers is, of course, Delta Air Lines, but there’s plenty of other international airline partners in the alliance, too.

In order to earn Aeromexico Rewards Points for your flight on a SkyTeam partner, be sure to add your Aeromexico Rewards number to your reservation. Keep in mind, you generally can’t earn points for two airlines at once, so the loyalty number you add will be the program to which you credit your earnings.

To that end, if you’re pursuing elite status with Delta or collecting SkyMiles for future flights, you can add your SkyMiles number to an Aeromexico reservation.

Earn by transferring

A key way U.S. travelers may wind up booking award travel on Aeromexico is by transferring credit card rewards points to an Aeromexico Rewards account.

Several major issuers allow card members to transfer their credit card rewards points to Aeromexico.

• Capital One customers can transfer miles to Aeromexico at a rate of 1:1.

• American Express customers can transfer Membership Rewards at a rate of 1:1.6. (So, 1,000 AmEx points = 1,600 Aeromexico Rewards Points).

• Citi ThankYou points transfer at a rate of 1:1.

Keep in mind, though, NerdWallet rated Aeromexico as one of AmEx’s worst transfer partners, so it’s worth assessing the value of your points and the specific redemption at hand before moving them to Aeromexico Rewards.

Other ways to earn

You can also earn Aeromexico Rewards Points through spending on the carrier’s line of co-branded credit cards. Eligible cardmembers can enjoy additional perks when flying with Aeromexico, like an extra free checked bag, Premier Lounge access and other priority services along the way.

Additionally, spending on the airline’s commercial partners can earn you points.

The principal way to redeem Aeromexico Rewards Points is through flying. The airline allows you to redeem points for two types of award tickets.

Classic Rewards tickets

Based off of a fixed award chart, which means you’ll book flights using a standard, predictable number of points.

The “redemption table,” as Aeromexico refers to it, specifies the number of points required for a single flight.

For instance, a flight between Mexico and certain parts of North America can run as low as 18,000 or 22,000 points per flight, depending on whether it’s during a peak period or not.

Meanwhile, a flight from Mexico to the Caribbean or northern South America will run 30,000 or 39,000 points (depending on the time of year), or 70,000 or 91,000 points for a Premier cabin ticket.

However, these fixed award pricing options are available for a limited number of tickets, according to Aeromexico.

Dynamic fares

These fares rely on dynamic pricing, which is what many other airlines are increasingly using for award pricing. This means award prices, similar to cash prices, are tied to your destination, class, availability and demand.

This is how Aeromexico now prices a majority of its award availability.

Redeem for extras

You can also redeem Aeromexico Rewards Points for non-ticket extras on the airline. Think seat selection, checked baggage, upgrades to the Premier cabin and more.

Aeromexico Rewards offers three tiers of elite status: Gold, Platinum and Titanium.

Like most airline elite status programs, members earn perks like premium cabin upgrades, fee waivers and priority treatment for boarding, check-in and the like.

Here’s what to expect in each of the three Aeromexico Rewards elite status tiers.

Because of Aeromexico’s participation in the SkyTeam Alliance, Platinum and Titanium members earn SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits whether they’re traveling on Aeromexico or a partner airline. Gold members get SkyTeam Elite benefits.

This helps members enjoy perks like early boarding, free baggage, dedicated security check-in counters, priority baggage drop-off and a host of other benefits.

Aeromexico operates a host of airport lounges in Mexico airports known as Salones Premier. They’re located in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Torreon, Chihuahua and Monterrey.

The lounges are equipped with free Wi-Fi, an à la carte food menu, full bar and snacks.

Aeromexico Rewards Platinum and Titanium members get lounge access with their status. Platinum members can bring one guest traveling on the same reservation; Titanium members can bring two.

Additionally, SkyTeam Elite Plus members can access Salones Premier lounges whether they’re flying with Aeromexico or a partner carrier.

This means Delta Medallion Gold, Platinum and Diamond members get lounge access.

Aeromexico can be a reliable option for U.S. travelers looking to book trips to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and beyond. Keep in mind, in most cases, you’ll have to make a connection in Mexico City. If such a layover doesn’t faze you, the airline might even be a good option for travel to Europe, Asia or elsewhere in the world if you find a good deal.
