Basic overview
The Bankwest Breeze Platinum Mastercard currently offers 0% interest on balance transfer for 24 months, which reverts to 12.99% after the promotional period has ended.
This gives new cardholders two years to pay down a transferred balance without racking up interest on the debt. After the promotion, the revert rate is significantly lower than the 21.44% average for balance transfers, according NerdWallet’s analysis of 100+ Australian credit cards.
While the card doesn’t earn rewards, it offers complimentary travel insurance and does not charge international transaction fees — making it a solid choice for those who spend a lot of money abroad or are looking to consolidate debt.
The $59 annual fee’s value:
The Bankwest Breeze Platinum Mastercard’s annual fee is $59. Over time, the benefits could potentially outweigh this fee, depending on usage.
Here’s how you could ‘cover’ the cost:
- Balance transfers: If you transfer $6,000 from a card with a 21.99% interest rate, you could save roughly $1,200 in interest over the 24 months. (Estimate the savings yourself with MoneySmart’s calculator).
- International transactions: If you spend a lot of money abroad and currently have a card that charges a 3% international transaction fee, and you spend at least $2,000 overseas annually, you could save $60 each year, which covers the annual fee.
Note: If you take out this card as part of Bankwest’s Complete Home Loan Package, no annual fee applies.
Promotional offer
The Bankwest Breeze Platinum Mastercard currently offers 0% interest on balance transfers for 24 months.
It’s important to note that a 3% balance transfer fee (or $4, whichever is greater) applies, and this fee is rolled into your transferred balance. So, moving $6,000 results in a new balance of $6,180 ($6,000 plus 3%).
The above offer was current at the time of writing and is subject to change.
Note: To retain the 0% interest rate on your balance transfer, you may be required to pay off all new charges made to the card, as well as any minimums, by the due date shown on your statement each month.
What’s the welcome offer worth?
If you have a $6,000 balance on a credit card with a 21.99% interest rate and transfer it to the Bankwest Breeze Platinum Mastercard:
- you could save $1,200 in interest payments over the two years
- you’d need to pay roughly $258 a month to clear the debt within the 24-month period.
This example relies on you paying off the balance in full in two years. To do this on the 21.99% interest rate card in the same time period, you’d need to pay roughly $315 every month.
In some cases, keeping the money on a higher-interest card may be the better option — but only if you know you can pay it off quickly.
For example:
- Paying off the $6,000 in four months (on a 21.99% interest rate card) would cost a little over $100 in interest.
- Transferring $6,000 to the Bankwest Breeze Platinum Mastercard would incur a $180 transfer fee — making it roughly $80 more expensive than simply paying off the balance in four months.
The above scenarios are hypothetical and use simplified calculations to show the possible savings. It doesn’t take into account late repayments, approved credit limits or other fees.
Mind the revert rate
If you have a credit card balance on a card with a higher interest rate, moving the balance to one with a lower interest could save you money — and give you time to pay down the balance. Remember that the new card’s standard interest rate applies once the promotional period ends. So, ideally, you want to pay off the debt during the promotional period. It’s also important to consider the new card’s standard rate versus the interest rate you are paying on your current card, especially where you may be unable to pay the balance transfer off within the lower interest rate period.
