How To Get Your Free Credit Report

Australia’s three major credit reporting agencies must give you free access to your credit report every three months.

Edited By

You are entitled to a free credit report every three months from each of the major credit reporting agencies in Australia (Equifax, Experian and illion). Since there may be some variations between the agencies, there’s no harm in getting reports from more than one provider.

Your credit score is not necessarily included in your credit report. You typically need to submit a separate application to get your free credit score.

Where to get your free credit report

You can request a free copy of your credit report every three months or sooner if you’ve been denied credit or recently made corrections to your report.

To request a free copy of your credit report, contact one or more of Australia’s credit reporting agencies:

Equifax credit reportOnline: Website form
By phone: 13 8332
By mail: Mail your request to PO Box 964, NORTH SYDNEY NSW 2059.
Experian credit reportOnline: Website form
By phone: 1300 783 684
Illion credit reportOnline: Website form
By mail: Complete the application form, include all necessary documents, and mail to the address on the form.

Getting your credit report online

You may be prompted to create an account to view or download it when applying online. You’ll then need to fill in your personal details and provide basic employment details, current and previous address, and identification, so keep your driver’s licence, passport, Centrelink card or Medicare card handy.

Once you’ve verified your identity, the credit agency reviews the submission. You can usually access your credit report online within a day or two.

What is the best site to get a free credit report?

Plenty of websites claim to offer free credit reports, and while some may be reputable, others may try to mislead or scam you. So, it’s best to get your free credit report directly from the three main credit reporting agencies in Australia (Equifax, Experian and illion). Avoid any provider that requires you to pay for the report and, of course, never provide your credit card details.

Checking your credit score

Your credit score may not be included in your report. If you just want to see your score, you can get it for free directly from the credit agencies. Alternatively, you can use a reputable third-party service via the government’s MoneySmart website. Remember, scores are almost always free, so avoid companies that ask for credit card details.

What is in a credit report?

Each of the three credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and illion) use slightly different formats to display the information they collect. However, credit reports from the three agencies generally include:

  • personal information, such as your name, date of birth and address
  • credit product details like the type of credit you have, missed payments or the provider’s information
  • financial hardship arrangements
  • defaults
  • information on applications for credit
  • bankruptcy, court judgments or personal insolvency agreement data
  • credit report requests from providers.
