UPDATE: The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has gone metal for good. When this article was first published in February 2017, Capital One said the metal version would be available only for a limited time and only for new applicants. As of 2021, however, metal construction appears to be a permanent feature of the card.
Metal credit cards have multiplied in recent years. Once a rare quality available only with the highest of high-end cards, metal has pushed farther into the mainstream. See some of the most popular options in our roundup of the best metal credit cards.
Below is our article from 2017 when Venture first offered a metal option.
Metal is the new plastic.
Capital One is making the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card available in metal. Those who apply for the travel credit card beginning Feb. 15, 2017, will receive a card that is “made of stainless steel veneer and is produced with 75% recycled materials,” according to a statement from the issuer.
The offer doesn’t apply to existing cardholders and is available only for a limited time. Capital One didn’t say when the promotion would end.
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card isn’t the only credit card that goes “plink.” The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the Prime Visa are all made of metal. Premium cards with steep annual fees have also touted their sleek exteriors. Consider the MasterCard Gold Card, for example, the “24K-Gold-Plated/Carbon Card” that charges a $995 annual fee.
But the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card stands out in a big way: It offers robust flat-rate rewards. This makes it a more appealing choice for some travelers. The card offers 2 miles per dollar spent on everything and has an annual fee of $95. Miles are worth 1 cent each when redeemed for travel booked through Capital One, or as a credit against travel purchases. The card also offers a sign-up bonus: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.
