The Apple Card’s lustrous titanium design and fee-free promises have caught the attention of many a Canadian. Unfortunately, the Apple Card remains out of reach north of the border.
What is the Apple Card?
The Apple Card is a no-fee credit card that earns cash-back rewards. The card can be linked to an iPhone for accessible account management and is compatible with Apple Wallet and Apple Pay.
Apple Card features
The Apple Card boasts a number of valuable features:
- No fees. There are no annual over-the-limit foreign transaction or late fees associated with the Apple Card.
- Titanium card. This laser-etched metal card is a sleek and sustainable alternative to plastic.
- Cash-back rewards. The Apple Card earns up to 3% cash back on dollars spent at select merchants.
Can Canadians get the Apple Card?
Canadians can not apply for the Apple Card as of this writing. The card represents a partnership between Apple and American multinational investment bank Goldman Sachs. The Apple Card’s U.S. roots present some regulatory roadblocks for Canadian consumers. Generally speaking, credit cards from U.S. financial institutions require applicants to have a U.S. mailing address and Social Security Number. Without these two pieces of information, Canadians cannot get the Apple Card.
Will the Apple Card Come to Canada?
Apple has not announced any plans to extend the Apple Card to Canadians. However, given the soon-to-be terminated partnership between Apple and Goldman Sachs, the card’s future appears uncertain. For the Apple Card to remain on the market, Apple will need to find a new financial partner.
Apple Card alternatives
A variety of alternatives to the Apple Card exist for Canadians. If you’re seeking a card without an annual fee that earns cash back, the Tangerine World Mastercard® or Simplii Financial™ Cash Back Visa Card may be worth a look. Both are compatible with digital wallets, including Apple Pay, and offer a number of additional perks to entice new cardholders, like purchase security and extended warranty protection, rental car coverage, mobile device protection, free global Wi-Fi and more.
