Website Privacy Statement

Nerdwallet Canada Inc. (referred to as “Nerdwallet”, “we” or “us” throughout this Privacy Statement), believes that you should understand the way in which we collect, use and otherwise process your information.

This Privacy Statement only describes the collection, use and disclosure of information in connection with our website nerdwallet.com/ca (the “Site”). It does not apply to information collected offline or on other websites hosted, or contributed to, by Nerdwallet or any of its affiliates.

Introduction and overview

At NerdWallet, our mission is to provide clarity for all of life’s financial decisions. We do so by striving to inform and empower consumers with financial guidance they can trust and by providing tools that help them make the best decisions for their financial needs.

When our consumers use our Site, mobile applications and other products (collectively, our “Services”), we have an obligation to access and use your personal information in a manner that is responsible and helps reduce privacy and security risks.

This Privacy Policy describes what information we collect about you, how we collect your information, how we use your information, whom we share your information with, and the steps we take to protect your information.

What information do we collect about you and how do we collect it?

How do we use your personal information?

Your information is an integral part of our operations, and we use it in a variety of ways in providing our Services and operating our business. We use the information you provide, for example:

A. To provide you the Services you request and enable non-affiliated third parties to market or provide additional services to you.

B. To operate, maintain and improve our Services and create new features and functionality.

C. To understand and analyze usage trends and preferences of our users across different devices.

D. For fraud detection and information security.

E. We may use your e-mail address or other personal information for internal compliance purposes, including but not limited to, (a) contacting you for administrative purposes such as customer service, and/or (b) addressing intellectual property, right of privacy or defamation issues related to content you have posted on our Services, and/or (c) we may also use your e-mail address and other personal information to send you promotional materials, offers, and/or messages related to our Services and the activities of third parties we work with. You can opt out of receiving promotional communications, through links provided in the messages, by updating your account preferences (where applicable) through our Services, or by completing our privacy form.

Who do we share information with?

We may share your personal information with other parties under the following circumstances: (1) with our partners or affiliates, when you ask us to share your information with them; (2) with our service providers, when required to to provide our services to you; or (3) where we are required by law to disclose your personal information.

For example, when you click through to an advertiser or partner we may share information with them to enable them to record that you have been referred to them by us and to understand your buying journey. To provide you with a full range of services, we also work with our partners or we allow you to click through to a partner’s site. These partners may, independently of us, collect and process your personal data and provide you with additional comparison services or products (including financial products) or you may provide them with contact details directly to allow them to contact you to better understand your product needs. 

We work closely with our partners to ensure that we only share information with them and they only share information with us that is required to enable us to provide you with our Services. We will make it clear when you are leaving our site and going to one of our partners. Any information that you provide to them will be governed by their own Privacy Policy and we recommend reading their privacy policy before continuing to use their services.

We may share your information with third party service providers to support our internal and business operations. In such cases, service providers may use the information only as necessary to provide the services to us and are contractually required to keep your information confidential and secure.

In certain instances, we may be required to share information with regulators. For example, we may be required to provide them with information on the services that we provide and the number of customers who have used our services or if we are dealing with a complaint.

This Site uses Google Analytics, which collects the following information:

The information that is collected by Google Analytics is presented to NerdWallet in anonymous, aggregate form, for the purposes of allowing us to evaluate use of the Site and improve the Site and the user experience. We cannot identify any individual from the data provided to us by Google Analytics.

We are not responsible for the acts or omissions of third parties such as Google. However, you should be aware that information collected by Google Analytics: (1) may be shared with other Google services and Google may use the collected data to contextualize and personalize the ads of its own advertising network; and (2) may be transferred, stored or otherwise processed outside Canada, in any country where Google operates, and such information may be accessible to courts, law enforcement and national authorities in such other countries. You may opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics, at any time, by using the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-On.

Access, Correction or Deletion. 

You may make a request to access, to correct or to delete your personal information (provided we no longer have a business need to retain your personal information). You may request a copy of the Personal Information or request that we delete or correct your personal information by submitting a request here. Even if you request for your personal information to be deleted, certain aspects may be retained for us to: meet our legal or regulatory compliance (e.g. maintaining records of transactions you have made with us); exercise, establish or defend legal claims; and to protect against fraudulent or abusive activity on the Site. 

Withdraw consent. 

You can withdraw your consent at any time to collection, use and disclosure of your personal information by submitting a request here. Withdrawing your consent will not affect the lawfulness of any processing we conducted prior to your withdrawal, nor will it affect processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.

File a complaint. 

You have the right to file a complaint with the applicable Privacy Commissioner about our collection and processing of your personal information.

Updates to this Policy.

We may update our Site at any time, in our sole discretion, in which case we will also update this Privacy Statement to reflect any additional online tracking activities and/or other collection, use or disclosure of personal information on or through the Site. Accordingly, we encourage you to check this Privacy Statement periodically for updates.

Except as described above, the Site does not use cookies or other tracking technologies, and we do not collect any personal information on or through the Site.
