The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express is no longer available to new cardholders, so this page may be out of date.

If you're seeking to collect Membership Rewards points, The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express will deliver, particularly if you mainly use your card on groceries, gas and travel bookings.

The card's $95 annual fee may have you looking instead toward its 0-annual-fee cousin, the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card. But the Preferred version features a more generous welcome offer, higher reward-earning potential and return protection, which might be enough to tip the scales in its favor. Terms apply.

If avoiding an annual fee is your main priority, or you prefer rewards in the form of cash back, consider other options. Otherwise, The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express may be worth a look. Here are five things to know about the card.

1. It’s a lower-fee way to snag Membership Rewards

Compared with many other American Express cards that earn Membership Rewards points, The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express charges a more palatable $95 annual fee. Terms apply (see rates and fees).

For comparison, the American Express® Green Card, the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express all charge significantly more. Terms apply.

Of course, The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express lacks the higher welcome offers and premium travel perks of those other cards — but the Membership Rewards you earn will be just as versatile. You can redeem for things like travel, merchandise or gift cards, or for statement credit to cover the cost of eligible charges. Other options include redeeming rewards at checkout at select online retailers or transferring rewards to airline or hotel partners. Point values vary depending on how you choose to redeem them.

2. It's a decent card for groceries, gas and travel

The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express starts with the following welcome offer: Earn 15,000 Membership Reward® points after you use your new Card to make $2,000 in purchases within the first 6 months (as of July 2024). Terms Apply.

On an ongoing basis, it earns:

  • 3 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (1 point per $1 after that).

  • 2 points per $1 spent at U.S. gas stations.

  • 2 points per $1 spent on eligible travel purchases booked through American Express Travel.

  • 1 point per $1 spent on other eligible purchases.

  • Terms apply.

3. Get 50% extra points by staying loyal

Reach for the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express at least once a day and you can increase your earnings for that month. If you use your card 30 or more times in a billing cycle, you’ll earn 50% more points. Returning a purchase will lower the total number of rewards you’ll earn (and therefore will also lower the points earned through the 50% bonus), but it still counts toward the 30 purchases needed to qualify.

4. You’ll pay 0% interest at first

Pay 0% intro APR on Purchases for 12 months, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24% - 28.24% Variable APR (as of July 2024). That’s a decent offer, but if your No. 1 priority is saving on interest payments, other cards offer longer 0% APR promotional periods. The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card, for example, offers 0% Intro on Purchases for 15 months, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24% - 29.24% (as of July 2024).

5. Other cards could be more rewarding

Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card
NerdWallet rating

If your primary goal is to earn American Express Membership Rewards, this card is a solid option. But if you're open to different rewards currencies, other cards could earn more.

Consider the rewards on the $95-annual-fee Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card:

  • 5 points per $1 spent on all travel purchased through Chase.

  • 3 points per $1 spent on dining (including eligible delivery services and takeout).

  • 3 points per $1 spent on select streaming services.

  • 3 points per $1 spent on online grocery purchases (not including Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs).

  • 2 points per $1 spent on travel not purchased through Chase.

  • 1 point per $1 spent on other purchases.

Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Credit Card
NerdWallet rating

It also comes with a much more bigger sign-up bonus: Get up to $1,050 in Chase Travel℠ value. Earn 60,000 bonus points after $4,000 in purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. That’s worth $750 when redeemed through Chase Travel. Plus, get up to $300 in statement credits on Chase Travel purchases within your first year.

If you'd rather not pay an annual fee, the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card could also be a good option. It earns unlimited 3 points per dollar on:

  • Restaurants.

  • Travel and transit.

  • Gas stations (and electric vehicle charging stations).

  • Popular streaming services.

  • Select phone plans.

Other purchases earn 1 point per dollar.
