22% of adults in the US are unbanked or underbanked*, and many more are struggling due to poor credit, inconsistent employment, and/or lack of trust in the financial system, among other issues that keep them from overcoming the barriers of financial access. This is especially true in low-income communities of color. Right now, there is an urgency to take a stand against social injustice and help those facing financial hardships. As leaders, you have both the responsibility and the means to support your community, especially those members who are currently outside of the financial system and facing these financial difficulties. How are we as (company name) helping our community? What resources, education, support and initiatives are we providing to our community? How are we working towards providing financial access to low-income families in our community? There is a simple, cost effective, yet very impactful way for companies like (company name) to get involved … and it won't cost you a dime. By buying CDs in credit unions that serve low-income communities, (company name) will enable the credit union to reinvest in the community by funding personal, commercial and mortgage loans to their members. The result is a win-win: a win for the credit union, a win for the community it serves and a win for (company name) and our employees. As an employee and member of this community, I urge you as a leader to consider taking real actionable steps to make a change. The Financial Equality Project is a social impact program that allows companies to invest their bankable dollars in local community development credit unions (CDCUs) that serve low-income communities.
