About Wagmo pet insurance

Wagmo earned 3.5 stars out of 5 for overall performance.

With Wagmo pet insurance, you can buy a stand-alone wellness plan for preventive care expenses, a policy for accident and illness coverage, or a combination of the two.

The company has a 100% reimbursement option in most states and covers veterinary exam fees. Wagmo offers unlimited vet telehealth services for members of its wellness plan, which can cover preventive care services like vaccines, grooming and dental cleaning.

However, Wagmo's lack of an unlimited annual coverage option could offset these benefits for some pet owners. Its accident and illness plans have quite a few exclusions, and wellness plans don’t cover spaying, neutering or microchipping.

  • Routine blood work.

  • Fecal and urine tests.

  • Flea, tick and heartworm prevention.

  • Grooming.

  • Dental cleaning.

  • VETalk telemedicine support and one-on-one behavioral training.

What's not covered

Wagmo’s accident and illness plan doesn’t cover:

  • Behavioral treatments.

  • Prescription food, vitamins or supplements, even if prescribed by your vet.

  • Alternative therapies, including acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy or hydrotherapy.

  • Conditions arising from fighting, neglect, guarding, racing or breeding.

  • Preventive care, including vaccines, wellness exams, and spaying or neutering.

  • Grooming or grooming supplies, unless your vet declares them medically necessary.

  • Cosmetic or elective surgery, including tail docking, ear cropping and dew claw removal.

  • Treatment of conditions for which your vet previously advised preventive care that you didn’t provide.

  • Three or more anesthetic removals for ingested objects in one policy period.

  • Treatment of cruciate ligament problems if your pet has had prior untreated cruciate ligament injuries to any leg before the start of the policy or within the past six months.

  • Microchipping.

Wagmo plan options

Deductibles: A pet insurance deductible is the amount you have to pay before your plan reimburses you for vet expenses. Wagmo has three deductible options: $250, $500 and $1,000 per year. Wellness plans don’t have a deductible.

Reimbursement amounts: After you pay your deductible, the insurance company will multiply your remaining balance by your reimbursement percentage to determine how much it will pay. You can have Wagmo reimburse 80%, 90% or 100% of your vet bills in most states. In California, 80% is the maximum reimbursement percentage.

Wagmo applies your deductible to your vet bill first, then your reimbursement percentage. Say you have a $1,000 vet bill, a 90% reimbursement rate and a $250 deductible. To determine your claim payout, Wagmo would first subtract your $250 deductible, then reimburse 90% of what’s left over ($750 x 90% = $675). This differs from some other pet insurers that apply the reimbursement rate before your deductible, which ends up reducing your payout.

Coverage limits: Wagmo generally has an annual coverage limit of $20,000, a per-incident limit of $10,000 and a lifetime limit of $100,000.

Restrictions and waiting periods

Age restrictions: Pets can usually enroll in a Wagmo accident and illness plan starting at 6 to 8 weeks of age. A maximum enrollment age of 15 years may apply. Once enrolled, you can continue to renew your policy no matter your pet’s age in most states. There are no age restrictions for wellness coverage.

Waiting periods: A pet insurance waiting period is the time between when you buy your policy and when your coverage starts. In most states, Wagmo’s waiting periods are 15 days for accidents and illnesses, 30 days for cancer treatments, and six months for cruciate ligament issues. Wagmo will waive the cruciate ligament waiting period if your pet has a vet exam within the first 30 days of your policy and the vet confirms there are no pre-existing knee conditions. Wellness plans have no waiting period.
