The 401(k) Finder is offered by Capitalize, a digital rollover solutions platform. Their 401(k) Finder tool securely searches multiple databases to help you find retirement savings accounts associated with your previous employers. You’ll need to provide a few details about yourself, including your name, birth date, phone number, ZIP code, and social security number.

You can get started with your search for free. Capitalize will let you know up front how many accounts they found associated with the information you provided. If they don’t find any accounts, there is no charge. If there are found accounts, to see details about the accounts, you can pay for an upgrade. This cost is not included in your NerdWallet+ membership. Pricing information is available from Capitalize.

A 401(k) rollover is when you transfer money from a 401(k) to another retirement savings account, usually an IRA. A rollover is what most people choose to do with the money they’ve saved in their 401(k) account when leaving a job.

Capitalize helps manage the entire process, including helping you follow the proper process, pick a new individual retirement account (IRA) and, if you choose, dealing with your old 401(k) providers for you.

Basic self-guided rollovers are always free.

If you choose to open an individual retirement account (IRA) with one of Capitalize’s preferred partners, you also can take advantage of expert support services for free.

If you choose to open an IRA with a financial institution that’s not one of Capitalize’s preferred partners, you’ll have the option to pay for additional expert support services if you want them. The cost of those additional services is not included in your NerdWallet+ membership.
