The days of “Who is it?” are gone — now, you can see who (or what) is at your door, in high definition.

Smart video doorbells are small, high-tech devices that can elevate your home’s safety. They can stand alone or integrate with a home security alarm system and help you protect packages, greet guests and catch “porch pirates” in real-time.

The best video doorbells on the market send intelligent alerts to your phone to tell you what’s happening in your entryway, offer two-way audio so you can speak to visitors and record footage day and night so a missing package is never a mystery. Some are battery-powered and can be installed in minutes; others connect to your home’s doorbell wiring for nonstop recording. Some devices can do both.

We reviewed the top video doorbells on the market for these features and more. Many of these models are often discounted, but the prices below are list prices. Here are our top picks.

You can speak and listen through the doorbell, and you can connect it to a smart lock so you can lock and unlock your door remotely. The battery is rechargeable, but you can also hardwire it to your doorbell system. You can also control the device verbally from an Alexa-enabled device.

Why we like it: Ring’s high-tech wired doorbell is a luxury version of its other models, with advanced features such as head-to-toe 1536p HD+ video and 3D motion detection. The device can also capture footage from a bird’s eye view and has sharper audio than other Ring models.

Unlike Ring’s 2nd-generation doorbell, this device doesn’t have a battery pack, so you’ll need to connect it to existing doorbell electrical wiring. Like other Ring doorbells, though, you can access additional features such as smart alerts and video storage with a monthly Ring Protect subscription plan.

Eufy doorbell

Why we like it: Eufy’s video doorbell only offers local video storage; most competitors have monthly cloud-storage subscription plans. The battery-powered S220 model we’re reviewing here, as well as the S330, stores up to 16GB of video on the included Eufy HomeBase device. Eufy’s wired video doorbell models store footage directly on the device.

According to Eufy, 16GB gives you 60 days of 15 minutes of video storage per day. Eufy offers cloud storage starting at $2.99 per month per camera for its battery-powered 1080p video doorbell and slim doorbell, but not the S220.

The S220 records in 2K HD, has built-in smart human detection and sends real-time alerts. It’s Google Voice and Alexa compatible, and it offers two-way audio so you can respond to visitors live. The device can also be connected to existing wiring for continuous power.

Why we like it: Google Nest’s video doorbell, available in wired and battery-powered editions, has helpful features that make it a top pick. Though you’ll need a Nest Aware subscription to access a longer video history, both devices include a three-hour video history.

Nest doorbells offer night vision, two-way audio, 1280p HD video and a 145-degree view field. The devices send intelligent alerts for people, packages, animals and vehicles, and you can also detect familiar faces with a Nest Aware subscription.

How we selected top doorbells

We ran highly rated video doorbells through a comprehensive rubric, measuring each product on pricing, video features, storage capabilities and customer reviews. Some video doorbells are only available for purchase as part of a custom home security system, such as one from home security provider Vivint, so they were not part of this review process.

Methodology

We collect data from providers and do firsthand testing as necessary. Our process starts by gathering information from providers and contacting providers for further information where needed. This information, combined with our specialists’ hands-on research, makes up our proprietary assessment process that scores each provider’s performance. The final output produces star ratings from poor (1 star) to excellent (5 stars). Ratings are rounded to the nearest half-star. Learn more about our ratings methodology here.
