More than half of all vehicle sales are SUVs, according to auto data company Cox Automotive, and it’s easy to explain their popularity. The best SUVs on the market have spacious passenger and cargo areas, versatility for both daily commutes and off-road adventures, strong safety ratings, and the ability to tow and haul with ease.

We’ve assessed numerous gas-powered SUVs and chosen those that stand out. Our ratings are based on safety, comfort, technology, driving features, fuel efficiency and — most important — cost and value.

Some people look at cars and trucks as machines, feats of engineering, and judge them on technical matters. We're NerdWallet, and so we see a vehicle as a purchase — among the biggest you'll ever make — an expense and, later, an asset you may want to sell. That is the lens we start with.

We've sifted through thousands of makes and models, and from across hundreds of data points isolated 60 or so that matter to most drivers. We also collect inputs from automotive industry experts, and give added weight to factors such as initial and ongoing costs, safety and value (again, we're NerdWallet). To learn more about our process, read our methodology for evaluating vehicles.

Finding the best SUV for you

SUVs are available in a range of sizes and capabilities. The only characteristic they all have in common is that the cargo area is in the cabin instead of the trunk. Some are large and suitable for family use, while other models are a subcompact size. Some are built only for daily driving, while others can also be used for off-roading. SUV MSRPs start in the low $20,000s and surpass $100,000 for luxury models.

When shopping for an SUV, you can narrow the field of possible makes and models by determining what’s important to you ahead of time. Here are some aspects to consider.

Passenger and cargo space: Think about how many people you’ll transport regularly. Small SUVs are easier to handle but may lack seating for larger families, while midsize and full-size models offer more room. Some SUVs have a third row and can accommodate up to nine passengers. Cargo capacity is also important — especially if you frequently haul sports equipment, luggage or bulky items. Check the space behind the second and third rows, and see if the seats fold flat for added flexibility.

Fuel efficiency: Compare fuel economy ratings — miles per gallon (mpg) for gas and miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) for electric SUVs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determines the mpg and MPGe rating for specific makes and models of cars, and you can find this information at fueleconomy.gov, on new vehicle window stickers, manufacturer websites and online car retailer sites. Ratings are provided for three types of driving: city, highway and combined (an average of city and highway).

Engine performance: Your driving priorities can play a role in engine choice. If power and towing ability matter most to you, look at six- or eight-cylinder options — typically midsize or full-size SUVS. Subcompact and compact SUVs with four- or six-cylinder engines boast better fuel economy ratings but usually aren’t as powerful. You will also find engines that are turbocharged or direct-injection, meaning they are smaller engines designed to improve performance without sacrificing fuel efficiency.

Towing capabilities: If towing is a priority, check the vehicle’s maximum capacity. Full-size SUVs can tow upwards of 8,000 pounds, which would be enough for a large boat. Some midsize options handle up to 6,000 pounds — enough for a small boat or camper. Consider whether towing-specific features like trailer sway control or a tow package are included or optional.

Safety ratings and features: Crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) can help you assess an SUV’s overall safety. Some models are more prone to rollovers due to their higher center of gravity. Look for advanced safety features — such as lane-keeping assist, automatic braking and blind-spot monitoring.

Drivetrain options: Whether an SUV has front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD), all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) affects performance, handling and cost. FWD models tend to be more affordable and fuel-efficient, while AWD and 4WD often provide better traction for off-road adventures or challenging weather conditions.

Technology and infotainment: Decide whether you need basic features or the latest tech. Some basic functions, such as smartphone connectivity, won’t require a subscription. Others, like a Wi-Fi hotspot, may have a trial period and then a monthly subscription cost. Compare standard versus optional features to ensure you get what you need and aren’t surprised by ongoing costs.

Once you’ve narrowed your choices, make sure to take a test drive of the actual vehicle, if possible. You can also learn a lot about certain makes and models by reading online owner reviews.

    Ongoing SUV costs to consider

Before buying an SUV, take into account these ongoing costs and some ways to reduce them.

    • If you’ll be financing, shop lenders and compare interest rates to find the best. An auto loan calculator can help you compare different loan offers to see your estimated monthly payment and total loan cost. If monthly payment is a concern, consider whether auto leasing might make sense for you.

    • Take time to get a preapproved auto loan, so you have an idea of the rate and maximum loan amount you can qualify for. Knowing your maximum loan amount gives you an SUV price range to target. Also, if you're buying from a car dealership, presenting a preapproved loan can give the dealer an interest rate to beat, possibly reducing your financing cost.

With so many different SUV makes and models to choose from, planning before you start shopping is key. Our SUV Buying Guide is an additional resource to help you decide on the best SUV for you.

How we rate and rank vehicles

Our car rankings are based on a thorough review of more than 3,400 makes and models, with upward of 500 data points for each, as well as inputs from respected third-party automotive resources. Within specific vehicle segments, we select 60 or more data points that matter most to buyers and owners of those vehicles. We then score the vehicle with the heaviest emphasis on helping you make a smart financial decision.

    Review and rating process

NerdWallet’s overall car ratings are weighted averages in seven categories.

    • Cost and value includes metrics like starting MSRP, warranties, five-year cost of ownership and resale value.

    • Safety includes safety features and industry safety awards.

    • Fuel efficiency includes combined, city and highway mpg for gas vehicles and MPGe for electric vehicles.

    • Driving features and functionality combines data points such as horsepower and drivetrain options, along with cargo and towing capacity. Cars can also lose points in this category for the number of recalls.

    • Comfort and interior covers metrics related to head and leg room, seating and temperature control.

    • Tech and convenience includes things like smartphone integration, wireless phone charging and infotainment. We get that these are must-haves for some people, but our methodology focuses most on cost and value factors.

    • Awards includes industry awards from Edmunds, Kelley Blue Book, Consumer Reports and Vincentric.

Subcategories within each of these categories vary slightly based on vehicle segments and what’s important to drivers in that group.

    About outside-award winners

Consumer Reports and Kelley Blue Book each have a history of evaluating vehicles and delivering useful information to consumers. Their awards reflect well-rounded assessments and, we think, are worth noting.

    About safety winners

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a nonprofit group with decades of experience performing crash tests and other safety evaluations on vehicles. Top performers are issued one or both of two designations: Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. To earn a TSP+ rating, vehicles must meet additional criteria for a higher level of safety performance related to front and side crash tests, headlight performance and pedestrian front crash prevention.

About the five-year cost of ownership

Our five-year cost of ownership estimate is based on information from AAA and Vincentric and includes the categories of financing, fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation. For comparison purposes, our cost of ownership estimate is based on the national average for a new, base-model vehicle driven 15,000 miles annually, with equal amounts of city and highway driving, and a gas price of 3.097 cents per gallon.

    About resale value

We base resale value on J.D. Power's forecast of a vehicle’s depreciation over the next three years. J.D. Power uses their industry-leading valuations data for this assessment and ranks each vehicle on a 100-point scale: Best (91-100), Great (81-90), Average (70-80) and Fair (0-69).
