Key facts
Compared to competitors, Liberty earns more positive customer reviews. On the Better Business Bureau, consumer ratings average about 4.5 stars out of 5, much higher than other top home warranty companies.
Pros
Can choose your own contractor.
Coverage in all states.
High customer satisfaction ratings.
Cons
Won't pay for wall damage when accessing plumbing or electrical items.
Among the companies we researched, Liberty Home Guard covers the most appliances in a single, appliance-only plan. Its Appliance Guard plan covers a refrigerator, dishwasher, oven/range/cooktop, clothes washer and dryer set, exhaust and ceiling fans, garage door openers and garbage disposals.
Cost: $49.99 per month and up; $70–$125 per service call.
Appliance-only plan available: Yes.
Coverage limit for appliances: $2,000 per appliance.
Repair guarantee: 60 days.
What makes it worth considering
It has an appliance-only plan. Choosing an appliance-only plan can be a cost-effective option for people who don’t want coverage for large systems, such as HVAC, electrical or plumbing.
Customers can hire their own technicians. If the company approves the contractor in advance, customers can choose their repair companies.
Optional coverage is available for a second refrigerator and stand-alone freezer. You’ll have to pay an extra monthly fee for coverage, though.
What to watch out for
Refrigerator coverage doesn’t include an ice maker. If you want to cover the ice maker built into your fridge, you’ll need to pay an extra fee for optional coverage.
No coverage for pre-existing conditions or malfunctions caused by rust or corrosion. If the company suspects that an issue started before you purchased the home warranty or that rust or corrosion contributed to a malfunction, it could deny your claim, leaving you to pay out of pocket for a repair. It’s not uncommon for home warranties to deny coverage because of these causes.
Liberty won’t pay for a second diagnosis by a different technician if you request one. If the company thinks the original diagnosis wasn’t accurate, it will pay for another technician to take a look at your appliance — but it won’t pay for it if you think the first technician got it wrong.

Key facts
Old Republic Home Protection's coverage limits are on the high end compared with competitors, especially for HVAC and appliances.
Pros
High coverage limits on HVAC, electrical and appliances.
May be able to choose your own contractor.
Decent customer satisfaction ratings compared to competitors.
Cons
If they have to put a hole in the wall, wall repair is only for a rough finish, no texture or paint.
With caps of up to $3,500 to $7,000 per appliance — some of the highest we've seen — our pick for best coverage limits goes to Old Republic Home Protection. The company has three plans, and the Basic and Deluxe plans cover up to $3,500 per appliance. The Elite plan pays up to $7,000 per appliance.
Cost: $55 per month and up; $100–$125 per service call.
Appliance-only plan available: No.
Coverage limit for appliances: $3,500 per appliance with the Basic and Deluxe plans; $7,000 per appliance with the Elite plan.
Repair guarantee: 30 days.
What makes it worth considering
The Basic plan, which is the cheapest option, covers a lot of appliances. Despite being the company’s cheapest plan, it covers a garbage disposal and ceiling and exhaust fans. The only thing missing compared to Liberty’s coverage is a washer and dryer set.
The ice maker is included in refrigerator coverage. This isn’t always a given, so this little addition makes the company’s fridge coverage sweeter than some competitors’ plans.
Optional coverage is available for additional refrigerators and free-standing freezers. If you’ve got an extra fridge or a free-standing freezer in your garage for additional storage, you can get coverage for them with an extra monthly fee.
What to watch out for
It doesn’t offer an appliance-only plan. That means even if you go with the cheapest plan, you might be paying to cover items that you don’t want to cover.
Coverage for a washer and dryer set requires a higher priced plan. Coverage only kicks in with the Deluxe plan, so you’ll have to pay more per month than the Basic plan’s price to have that option.
It doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions or issues caused by rust or corrosion. This isn’t commonly covered by companies, but if you have a problem due to either issue, Old Republic won’t pay for a repair.
Old Republic only offers a 30-day guarantee on repairs. This falls within the standard guarantee range of 30 to 60 days, but it’s among the lowest guarantees offered by home warranty companies.
Although 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty earns low marks in other areas, it has the best repair guarantee we’ve found yet: Any repairs an approved technician makes to your appliances are warrantied for the remainder of your plan’s term. That means if a technician repairs your fridge while you’ve got eight months left in your plan and the same problem occurs six months later, 2-10 will send out another technician without charging you a service fee.
With most home warranty companies only offering 30 to 60 days of repair warranties, we really like this extra cushion of coverage. However, keep in mind that if a repair technician works on an appliance during the last two months of your plan, the extended repair warranty might not come out to much more than a 60-day guarantee.
Cost: $35 per month and up; $65–$100 per service call.
Appliance-only plan available: Yes.
Coverage limit for appliances: $2,000 for refrigerator, $1,000 for range/oven/cooktop, $500 for dishwasher and $500 for built-in microwave; raising aggregate appliances from $4,000 to $5,000 in coverage is available for a fee.
Repair guarantee: Full term of the agreement.
What makes it worth considering
The company has one of the longest repair guarantees. Depending on when an item is repaired, the repair warranty could be well beyond any competitors’ repair guarantees.
It has an appliance-only plan. This option helps you avoid paying for coverage outside of appliances.
Refrigerator coverage includes the built-in ice maker. It has decent appliance coverage limits. Plans offer up to $2,000 in coverage for refrigerators, $1,000 for ovens/ranges/cooktops and $500 for microwaves. However, the company only covers dishwashers up to $500.
2-10 allows customers to hire technicians for second opinions. You’ll have to follow the company’s policy to ensure you do it properly to be reimbursed. This option isn’t common with home warranty companies.
What to watch out for
Coverage limits differ by appliance. Instead of having the same limit on every appliance, 2-10’s coverage is different for each appliance.
Coverage limit for some appliances is relatively low. The appliance-only plan only pays up to $500 for a dishwasher, which might be a stretch to replace your existing dishwasher with that amount.

Key facts
Unlike most plans, the ShieldPlatinum plan includes roof leak coverage. Usually, this coverage is only available as an add-on.
Pros
Will pay for wall damage when accessing plumbing or electrical items.
Most home warranty plans only include one fridge with their appliance coverage, but American Home Shield covers multiple refrigerators starting with its ShieldGold plan.
Cost: $39.99 per month and up; $100–$125 per service call.
Appliance-only plan available: No.
Coverage limit for appliances: $2,000 per appliance with the ShieldGold plan; $4,000 per appliance with the ShieldPlatinum plan.
Repair guarantee: 30 days.
What makes it worth considering
Multiple refrigerators are covered in the ShieldGold plan. This extra bit of coverage can be helpful if you have an extra fridge in the garage. The coverage includes the ice makers.
The ShieldPlatinum plan increases appliance coverage to $4,000 per appliance. It costs more per month, but the increased coverage limit is an option.
AHS covers malfunctions due to a lack of maintenance or rust or corrosion. It’s rare that home warranty companies cover issues related to these situations, so this is a plus.
Customers can request a second opinion. American Home Shield will pay for a different technician to diagnose an issue on a covered appliance at the customer’s request. However, if the second opinion matches the first diagnosis, you’ll have to pay a second service fee.
Customers can hire their own repair technicians if the company approves them in advance. This can be a convenience if you have a relationship with a repair company; however, American Home Shield doesn’t specify in which situations it approves a contractor outside of its network.
Label
What to watch out for
The company doesn’t have an appliance-only plan. This makes it a less appealing option if you don't want or need coverage for home systems, like electrical or plumbing.
American Home Shield doesn’t offer appliance coverage in its cheapest plan, ShieldSilver. You’ll have to purchase ShieldGold or ShieldPlatinum to cover your appliances, which will cost you more per month.
There is no optional coverage available for stand-alone freezers. This coverage is different from coverage for a second refrigerator, so the company won’t pay for repairs to freezers that are unattached to fridges.
Repair guarantees are only for 30 days. Although this is a standard time frame in the home warranty industry, it is shorter than some of competitors’ guarantees.

Key facts
Cinch Home Services guarantees their technicians' repairs for 180 days, which is much longer than their competitors' standard 30-day and 60-day guarantees.
Pros
Will pay for wall damage when accessing covered items.
Cinch Home Services is the only home warranty provider we researched that covers appliances with pre-existing conditions. To qualify, the appliance failure has to be caused by an issue that you couldn’t detect with a visual inspection or by testing the appliance.
Cost: $30.99 per month and up; $100–$150 per service call.
Appliance-only plan available: Yes.
Coverage limit for appliances: $2,000 per appliance.
Repair guarantee: 180 days.
What makes it worth considering
It has an appliance-only plan available. You can purchase cover only for your appliances if that’s all you need.
Plans come with a 180-day repair guarantee. It doesn’t have the best repair guarantee, but Cinch’s repair warranty of 180 days comes second only to 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty, which guarantees repairs through the end of the service agreement period.
It offers competitive coverage limits. At $2,000 per appliance, the company’s coverage is higher than that of some competitors but not at the top of available coverage limits for home warranties.
Plans cover malfunctions due to rust and corrosion. In addition to covering pre-existing conditions, Cinch also covers appliances that fail because of corrosion and rust.
What to watch out for
Customers can’t hire their own technicians. If you don’t like the company’s technician or want a different technician to give a second opinion, the company won’t reimburse you for the cost.
There’s no optional coverage for a stand-alone freezer. Several competitors offer this additional coverage, but Cinch doesn’t have it.

Key facts
Unlike most competitors, First American Home Warranty's most basic warranty covers both systems (plumbing, electrical and heating) and certain appliances.
Pros
Will pay for some wall damage when accessing repairs.
High coverage limits on electrical and plumbing.
Decent customer satisfaction ratings compared to competitors.
First American Home Warranty is our pick for the best coverage of commercial brand appliances in the home kitchen. As the only company among those we researched that cover commercial grade appliances, it’s a good option to consider to cover your more expensive appliances. To qualify for coverage, commercial brand appliances must be installed in your home’s kitchen and not used for a business.
Cost: $42 per month and up; $75–$125 per service call.
Appliance-only plan available: No.
Coverage limit for appliances: For most appliances, $3,500 per appliance with Starter and Essential plans and $7,000 per appliance with Premium plan; there is no limit for a clothes washer and dryer set with the Premium plan.
Repair guarantee: 30 days.
What makes it worth considering
Plans have high coverage limits. The Essential and Starter plans cover up to $3,500 per appliance, and the Premium plan pays up to $7,000 per appliance. These amounts are higher than most competitors’ limits.
It covers issues caused by lack of maintenance. Few companies will cover appliances if you fail to maintain them properly, so First American’s coverage extends a little further than competitors’ coverage.
Plans pay to repair issues caused by rust or corrosion, which isn’t common among home warranty companies.
Customers can request a second opinion. First American will pay for another technician to come out and give a second opinion on the cause of a malfunction; however, if the second technician agrees with the first one, you’ll have to pay a service fee for the second technician’s visit.
Customers can hire their own repair technicians. If the company can’t locate a technician in your area, it can approve you to hire your own technician. You’ll have to get the company’s approval before hiring the technician, though.
What to watch out for
There’s no appliance-only plan. Because the company’s plans are all comprehensive, you might end up paying for coverage beyond just your appliances.
Its repair guarantee is only for 30 days. Even though 30 days is common among home warranty companies, some competitors offer longer repair warranties.

Select Home Warranty offers an appliance-only plan, a systems-only plan and a combined plan so customers can be more specific about their coverage.
Pros
Coverage in most states.
Decent customer satisfaction ratings compared to competitors.
Cons
Won't pay for wall damage when accessing plumbing or electrical items.
Select Home Warranty has an appliance-only plan that covers most appliances, excluding exhaust fans, ceiling fans and garage door openers. Its coverage limit for appliances is only $500, one of the lowest among the companies we researched, and refrigerator coverage doesn’t include built-in ice makers.
Customers normally can’t hire their own technicians, but Select’s service agreement says it’s possible if the company approves the technician in advance. Select won’t pay a technician to give a second opinion at the customer’s request. It also doesn’t cover appliances for a lack of maintenance, pre-existing conditions or rust or corrosion.

Key facts
Home Service Club's basic plan includes coverage of most major home systems and most commonly covered appliances.
Pros
Can choose your own tech if authorized.
Will repair damage to walls when accessing repairs if you haven't reached the coverage limit.
Home Service Club doesn’t have an appliance-only plan, so you’ll have to go with a comprehensive plan to cover your appliances. Rather than having the same coverage limit for all appliances, Home Service Club specifies how much it’ll pay to repair or replace each appliance. Its coverage includes:
$350 for a trash compactor.
$500 for a built-in microwave.
$600 for a dishwasher.
$750 for a refrigerator.
$750 for an oven, range or cooktop.
$800 combined for a clothes washer and dryer.
The company’s appliance coverage includes most kitchen appliances but excludes garbage disposals, exhaust fans, ceiling fans and garage door openers — and refrigerator coverage doesn’t include the built-in ice maker. Home Service Club offers a 90-day guarantee on parts for technicians’ repairs, but it only warranties technicians’ labor for 30 days. And it doesn’t cover issues related to rust or corrosion, a lack of maintenance or pre-existing conditions.
The company won’t pay for another technician to come out if you request a second opinion, and you can hire your own technician only if the company requests that you do it.
Plans with appliance coverage start at $56.66 per month.
How we chose the best companies for appliance coverage
To determine which companies provided the best home warranty coverage for appliances, we considered several factors, including but not limited to:
How much a company will pay toward an appliance repair or replacement.
If certain situations exclude coverage.
How long a company guarantees a repair without charging a second service fee.
Which appliances are covered and if optional coverage is available.
Our rigorous research shows that home warranty companies vary widely with several factors, making them more suitable for certain situations or types of customers. We’ve reviewed our research to determine which companies offer the best options and which type of customer they are best suited for. These recommendations are based on research conducted in May and June 2024.
Our Home Services team reviews home warranty companies with our readers in mind. We provide unbiased reviews that consider several factors, including cost, covered items, coverage limits, customer ratings, ability to choose your own technician and warranty on work completed. When rating home warranties, we researched 13 companies, compared terms and conditions in their service agreements and read customer reviews from three consumer review websites. While NerdWallet does have partnerships with some home warranty companies, our editorial team is uninvolved in that process to ensure unbiased reviews and recommendations. Read more about how NerdWallet rates home warranties.
