About Allstate pet insurance

5.0

NerdWallet rating

Allstate earned 5 stars out of 5 for overall performance. Allstate pet insurance policies are offered by a company called Embrace, which appears on NerdWallet’s list of the Best Pet Insurance Companies.

Allstate and Embrace pet insurance plans have several options for customizing policies. The accident and illness plan covers a wide range of conditions, including breed-specific and genetic conditions, behavioral issues and dental disease. Though pet insurance generally doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, Embrace makes an exception if the condition is curable and your pet has been symptom-free for at least a year.

Allstate pet insurance plans and coverage

Through Embrace, Allstate offers two basic pet insurance plans with an optional wellness plan you can add on.

Note: Coverage options and availability may vary depending on where you live and the age and breed of your pet.

Accident and illness coverage

Allstate and Embrace’s accident and illness policy covers:

  • Hospitalization and surgery for injuries and illnesses.

  • Emergency treatment.

  • Diagnostic testing.

  • Dental illness, up to $1,000 annually.

  • Breed-specific and genetic conditions.

  • Alternative treatments, including acupuncture, chiropractic care and therapeutic laser treatment.

  • Behavioral treatment.

  • Prosthetic and mobility devices.

You may also be able to add coverage for vet exam fees and prescription drugs.

Accident-only coverage

Allstate offers an accident-only plan through Embrace that doesn’t cover illnesses. It can reimburse some of your vet bills if your cat gets hit by a car or your dog accidentally eats something poisonous. The accident-only plan also covers bloat, an emergency condition in which air gathers in a dog’s stomach, causing twisting in the stomach.

Wellness Rewards

You can purchase Wellness Rewards as an add-on in most states to help you plan for routine costs. These expenses include:

  • Wellness exams.

  • Vaccinations.

  • Nutritional supplements.

  • Microchipping.

  • Flea, tick and heartworm prevention.

  • Preventive dental care.

  • Grooming and medicated shampoo.

  • Toenail trimming and care.

  • Routine gland expression.

  • Cremation and burial.

The Wellness Rewards program is available in $250, $450 and $650 tiers, and is designed to save you $25 annually on routine care. In other words, if you chose the $450 plan, you’d pay $425 for the year, billed in monthly increments of $35.42.

However, any money you don’t spend for the year won’t roll over or be refunded. So you wouldn’t save money if you spent less than $425 on your pet’s wellness care for the year.

What Allstate pet insurance doesn't cover

Allstate and Embrace pet insurance plans don’t cover:

  • Pre-existing conditions, unless they’re curable and your pet has been symptom-free for at least a year.

  • Routine veterinary care, including annual checkups, unless you’ve added Wellness Rewards.

  • Costs related to breeding or pregnancy.

  • Intentional injury by you or a household member.

  • Illness or injury due to racing, cruelty or neglect.

  • Cosmetic procedures that aren’t medically necessary, including tail docking, ear cropping and dew claw removal.

Allstate pet insurance plan options

Deductibles: A pet insurance deductible is the amount you have to pay before your plan reimburses you for vet expenses. Embrace charges annual deductibles ranging from $100 to $1,000 for its accident and illness plan. The accident-only plan has a $100 annual deductible.

Reimbursement amounts: The accident and illness policy can reimburse 70%, 80% or 90% of your vet bills once you’ve met your deductible. The accident-only plan reimburses 90% of your costs.

Unlike some pet insurance providers, Embrace calculates your claim payout by applying the deductible to your vet bill before the reimbursement amount kicks in. Suppose you had an accident and illness policy with a $100 deductible and an 80% reimbursement level. If your dog began vomiting and incurred a $1,000 vet bill, you would be reimbursed as follows:

  • $1,000 vet bill - $100 deductible = $900.

  • $900 x 0.8 (80% reimbursement) = $720 reimbursed.

Did you know...

Many pet insurers apply your reimbursement rate to your vet bill before subtracting your deductible, resulting in a slightly lower claim payout. Here’s how the math would work using the example above:

  • $1,000 vet bill x 0.8 (80% reimbursement) = $800.

  • $800 - $100 deductible = $700 reimbursed.

Coverage limits: Annual coverage amounts range from $5,000 to unlimited for accident and injury plans. The accident-only plan has a $5,000 limit per year.

Restrictions and waiting periods

Age restrictions: You can sign up your puppy or kitten for an Allstate accident and illness policy from Embrace once it's 6 weeks old. You can’t buy an accident and illness policy for a pet age 15 or older, but senior pets are eligible for accident-only coverage.

Waiting periods: A waiting period is the time between when you buy your policy and when your coverage starts. Allstate and Embrace have a two-day waiting period for accident claims and a 14-day waiting period for illness claims. Additional waiting periods may apply to orthopedic claims in some states.
