About Figo pet insurance

4.5

NerdWallet rating

Figo earned 4.5 stars out of 5 for overall performance thanks to customizable accident and illness plans that come with plenty of perks. For example, the company may reduce your deductible by $50 each year you go without filing a claim.

Figo has a useful app with features to help manage your pet’s wellbeing. You can use it to set up health reminders, chat with a veterinarian 24/7, view your pet’s medical records, and file and track claims.

The company's policies offer coverage for orthopedic conditions, hip dysplasia, prescription medication, non-routine dental treatment, cancer treatments and much more. However, Figo won’t cover prescription food or sick exam fees unless you upgrade your plan. Supplements are never covered, and accident-only coverage isn’t available.

Figo partners with Costco, and Costco members may be eligible for a discount on their policy.

Pros

No upper age limit for pets.

Unlimited annual coverage is available.

Several reimbursement options to choose from, including 100% reimbursement for some pets.

Figo pet insurance plan options

Deductibles: A pet insurance deductible is the amount of your vet bills you need to pay before the insurer starts reimbursing you. Figo’s annual deductibles generally range from $100 to $1,500. Not all options may be available to all pets.

Reimbursement amounts: You can typically choose to be reimbursed for 70%, 80%, 90% or 100% of your expenses.

Figo applies the reimbursement rate to your eligible vet expenses before it subtracts your deductible, leading to a slightly less generous payout than companies that subtract the deductible first. Say you have a $1,000 vet bill, 80% reimbursement and a $100 deductible. Here’s how Figo would likely calculate your reimbursement:

  • $1,000 vet bill x 0.8 (80% reimbursement) = $800.

  • $800 - $100 deductible = $700 total reimbursement.

In total, you’d pay $300.

Did you know...

A company that subtracts your deductible first would reimburse a bit more. Here’s the math:

  • $1,000 vet bill - $100 deductible = $900.

  • $900 x 0.8 (80% reimbursement) = $720 total reimbursement.

Coverage limits: Pet owners can choose from annual coverage limits of $5,000, $10,000 or unlimited.

Restrictions and waiting periods

Age restrictions: Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to be covered. Figo has no upper age limits.

Waiting periods: A waiting period is the time between the date you buy your policy and the date that coverage starts. Figo’s waiting periods are generally one day for accidents, 14 days for illnesses and six months for orthopedic injuries to dogs. However, you may be able to waive the orthopedic waiting period by having your vet examine your dog and complete the company’s waiver form.

Figo pet insurance vs. competitors

Here’s how Figo stacks up against three other popular pet insurance companies.

Figo vs. Healthy Paws

Both Figo and Healthy Paws offer accident and illness policies with the potential for no annual limit and a low $100 deductible. (Not all Healthy Paws deductibles are available to all pets.)

Compared with Figo, Healthy Paws pet insurance offers fewer coverage options to choose from. It doesn’t offer a wellness package, or the option to cover exam fees, prescription diets or behavior modification — all things Figo can cover. Healthy Paws also won’t insure pets age 14 and up, while Figo has no upper age limit.

Healthy Paws covers hip dysplasia only for pets under 6 years old at the time of enrollment, and it doesn’t offer a 100% reimbursement option for all vet expenses like Figo does. But Healthy Paws does give the option to pay your vet directly, a convenient feature Figo doesn’t provide.

$100 to $1,000 per year. (Not all options are available to all pets.)

50% to 90%. (Not all options are available to all pets.)

Annual limit

$5,000, $10,000 or unlimited.

Unlimited.

Figo vs. Trupanion

Both Figo and Trupanion pet insurance offer accident and illness plans with no annual limits. But Trupanion doesn’t offer wellness coverage, which means it won’t pay for things like parasite control, vaccinations, or getting your pet spayed or neutered.

Trupanion doesn’t offer a 100% reimbursement option like Figo does. It generally offers 90% reimbursement for all pets.

The way Trupanion’s deductible works is unique. Unlike Figo, which has an annual deductible that applies to all accidents or illnesses in a given year, Trupanion’s deductibles apply to individual conditions and don’t reset each year. That means if your dog needs regular medication, you’ll only need to pay the deductible for that medication once, as opposed to once per year with Figo.

In a few states, Trupanion plans have no deductible. The lowest deductible Figo offers is $100.

Figo vs. Nationwide

While Figo has a single accident and illness policy that you can customize, Nationwide has a variety of plans to choose from. Figo’s plan and Nationwide’s Whole Pet and Modular plans all reimburse you for a percentage of your vet bills. With Figo, you can choose up to 100% reimbursement, while Nationwide’s plans offer anywhere from 50% to 80%, depending on which one you buy.

However, Nationwide also has a plan called Major Medical, which pays a set amount based on your pet’s diagnosis, regardless of what your vet charges.

Both companies offer 24/7 access to vet support.

How we review pet insurance

Our writers and editors follow strict editorial guidelines that ensure fairness and accuracy to help you choose the financial products that work best for you. In our pet insurance reviews, we consider coverage, discounts, financial strength ratings from AM Best and more to determine our star ratings.

Our rating system rewards companies that cover a wide range of potential expenses, offer many ways to customize your plan and have a strong financial rating. Within the consumer experience category, we looked at features such as mobile app ratings and whether the company offers direct vet payments. To calculate each insurer’s rating, we adjusted the scores to a curved 5-point scale.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Figo covers hip dysplasia. There is a six-month orthopedic waiting period before coverage begins for dogs. You may be able to waive this waiting period with a vet exam.

Figo may cover non-routine dental treatment if it’s related to an injury or illness. Your pet must have no history of periodontal disease and get the dental care your vet recommends. Figo doesn’t pay for preventive or routine cleaning unless you add wellness coverage. Learn more about pet dental insurance.

You must cancel your policy in writing by emailing Figo’s customer support team.
