About State Farm pet insurance

4.0

NerdWallet rating

State Farm pet insurance, provided by Trupanion, earned 4 stars out of 5 for overall performance. State Farm and Trupanion's plans offer several appealing features, such as unlimited coverage over a pet’s lifetime and an option for Trupanion to pay your vet directly. Even if your pet’s vet doesn’t accept direct payments, Trupanion says that 70% of claims are paid within 24 hours. The company’s per-condition lifetime deductible could save you money if your pet develops a chronic illness.

However, policies from Trupanion and State Farm don’t cover exam fees. There’s no accident-only plan, and you can’t purchase wellness coverage as an add-on.

State Farm pet insurance plans and coverage

State Farm and Trupanion offer a single plan that covers accidents and illnesses. There’s no option to add a wellness plan for routine care. The plan covers:

  • Accidental injuries.

  • Illnesses, including cancer.

  • Allergies.

  • Hereditary and congenital conditions.

  • Surgeries and hospitalization.

  • Diagnostic tests.

  • Prescription medications.

  • Veterinary supplements.

  • Prescription food for up to two months.

  • Prosthetic devices and carts.

Depending on where you live, you may also be able to add up to three optional packages. These include:

Recovery and Complementary Care rider

This package provides 90% reimbursement for the following types of treatment, provided that they aren’t associated with a pre-existing condition:

  • Rehabilitative care.

  • Behavioral modification.

  • Acupuncture.

  • Hydrotherapy.

  • Chiropractic care.

  • Homeopathic and naturopathic treatment.

Pet Owner Assistance Package endorsement

This package provides coverage for:

  • Third-party liability protection. That means if your pet damages someone else’s property, Trupanion could help cover the costs.

  • Costs of advertising and rewards if your pet is lost or stolen.

  • Boarding fees for your pet if you’re hospitalized for more than four days.

  • Vacation cancellation reimbursement if you have to cancel travel because your pet is sick or injured.

  • Cremation or burial.

Breeding rider

The breeding rider covers accidents and illnesses related to breeding, whelping and queening if you intentionally breed your pet.

Note: Coverage options and availability may vary depending on where you live and the age and breed of your pet.

What State Farm pet insurance doesn't cover

State Farm and Trupanion policies don’t cover:

  • Exam fees.

  • Wellness visits.

  • Preventive dental care.

  • Elective and cosmetic procedures, including tail docking, ear cropping, declawing, dew claw removal and microchip implantation.

  • Preventable parasitic infection.

  • Spay or neuter surgery unless required to treat an accident or illness.

State Farm pet insurance plan options

Deductibles: A pet insurance deductible is the amount you must pay before your plan reimburses you for vet expenses. In most states, Trupanion allows you to choose a deductible between $0 and $1,000. Unlike other pet insurers, Trupanion applies a deductible to each condition over the pet’s lifetime, rather than annually.

So if your dog broke her leg, you’d pay a single deductible to cover treatment related to the injury. But if she developed chronic kidney disease two months later, a separate deductible would apply. If she required medication for the rest of her life, you wouldn’t pay out of pocket for the medication once you hit the deductible for the kidney disease.

Reimbursement amounts: Once you’ve met your deductible, Trupanion will cover 90% of your vet bills in most states. Like many pet insurance companies, Trupanion applies the reimbursement rate to your vet bill before the deductible when calculating your claim payout. For example, if you had a $3,000 vet bill and a $200 deductible, Trupanion’s 90% reimbursement rate would be applied as follows:

  • $3,000 vet bill x 0.9 (90% reimbursement rate) = $2,700.

  • $2,700 - $200 deductible = $2,500 reimbursement.

Did you know...

Insurers applying the deductible to your vet bill first would pay a little more for each claim. Here’s the math for the scenario described above:

  • $3,000 vet bill - $200 deductible = $2,800.

  • $2,800 x 0.9 (90% reimbursement rate) = $2,520 reimbursement.

Coverage limits: Unlimited.

Restrictions and waiting periods

Age restrictions: You can enroll your pet through age 13. Those 14 or older aren’t eligible for new enrollments, but older pets can keep their plan if you started coverage when they were younger.

Waiting periods: A waiting period is the time between when you buy your policy and when your coverage starts. State Farm and Trupanion plans have a five-day waiting period for accidental injuries and a 30-day waiting period for illnesses.
