State availability

Travelers currently offers homeowners insurance in 45 states and Washington, D.C.

Availability may change at any time. Coverage may not be available to all homeowners in a given state.

Standard Travelers home insurance coverage

You can customize your homeowners policy with numerous add-ons, but below are the types of coverage that generally come standard:

  • Dwelling. Pays to repair or rebuild the structure of your home.

  • Other structures. Covers damage to unattached structures such as sheds or fences.

  • Personal property. Pays to repair or replace personal belongings such as furniture or clothing.

  • Loss of use. Pays for hotel stays, restaurant meals or other expenses if you have to live elsewhere while your home undergoes covered repairs.

  • Personal liability. Covers legal expenses and damages if you're responsible for injuries to other people or their property.

  • Medical payments. Covers injuries to guests in your home, regardless of fault.

Optional Travelers home insurance coverage

Beyond the standard coverage for your home and belongings, Travelers offers the following add-ons:

Special personal property coverage. Standard personal property coverage pays out if your belongings are stolen or damaged due to disasters listed in your policy. This add-on broadens your coverage to pay out for damage from any disaster — unless it’s specifically excluded in your policy.

Contents replacement cost. If your belongings are stolen or destroyed, Travelers will reimburse you with enough money to buy new replacements rather than lowering your payout for older items based on depreciation.

Additional replacement cost coverage. This provides extra funds if your home is destroyed and the cost to rebuild it is more than your dwelling coverage limit.

Extra coverage for jewelry and valuables. You can raise your coverage limits for certain valuable items or put them on a separate policy if the standard homeowners policy doesn’t provide sufficient coverage.

Water backup and sump pump discharge or overflow. This rider adds coverage if drains, sewer lines or sump pumps back up and cause water damage to your home.

Identity fraud. With this coverage, Travelers may reimburse you up to $25,000 if your personal information is stolen and used fraudulently.

Green home coverage. This rider pays for you to use environmentally friendly materials when repairing or rebuilding your home after a covered claim.

What’s not covered by Travelers home insurance

Standard Travelers home insurance policies do not cover damage caused by:

  • Flooding.

  • Backed-up sewers or drains.

  • Wear and tear.

  • Neglect.

Optional coverage is available for some of these scenarios.

What Reddit users say about Travelers

Reddit is an online forum where users share their thoughts in “threads” on various topics. The popular site includes plenty of discussion on financial subjects like home insurance, so we sifted through Reddit forums to get a pulse check on how users feel about insurers. People post anonymously, so we cannot confirm their individual experiences or circumstances.

Reddit comments about Travelers are a mixed bag. While many posters say the company is a solid option for homeowners insurance, there are plenty of complaints, too. Some people report problems with claims, while others say the company jacked up their rates or refused to renew their policies. Several posters share that Travelers required them to trim trees, replace their roof or make other fixes in order to keep their coverage. (For more on this topic, see how home insurers are using aerial imagery of people’s houses to drop policies.)

Questions from Reddit: Our experts answer

Can Travelers drop my policy if I don’t fix my home?

Insurers like Travelers may threaten not to renew your homeowners policy if you don’t take certain measures such as getting a new roof or cutting back trees that overhang the house. This is legal — and increasingly common.

To an insurance company, things like older roofs and debris in your yard are risk factors that could turn into potential claims and cost the company money. As long as it gives you the legal amount of notice required in your state, the company can decline to insure you if your home doesn’t meet its underwriting requirements. Learn more about home insurance non-renewals.

Can Travelers do an inspection of my home at any time?

Inspections are most common when you first buy a policy, but insurance companies may conduct them at other times. They’re generally looking to make sure your home is in good shape and matches the details provided in your policy application. If the inspector spots problems, you may be required to fix them if you want to retain your coverage. Get more information about home insurance inspections.

Methodology

Homeowners insurance star ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s homeowners insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints, coverage, discounts and online experience. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews.

Here’s how we weighted each category to come up with our list of the best home insurance companies:

  • Consumer complaints (30%).

  • Financial strength (30%).

  • Coverage (20%).

  • Consumer experience (10%).

  • Discounts (10%).

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2021-2023. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Homeowners insurance rates methodology

NerdWallet calculated median rates for 40-year-old homeowners from various insurance companies in every ZIP code across the U.S. All rates are rounded to the nearest $5.

Sample homeowners were nonsmokers with good credit living in a single-family, two-story home built in 1984. They had a $1,000 deductible and the following coverage limits:

  • $300,000 in dwelling coverage.

  • $30,000 in other structures coverage.

  • $150,000 in personal property coverage.

  • $60,000 in loss of use coverage.

  • $300,000 in liability coverage.

  • $1,000 in medical payments coverage.

We made minor changes to the sample policy in cases where rates for the above coverage limits or deductibles weren’t available.

These are sample rates generated through Quadrant Information Services. Your own rates will be different.
